Fraser River Fishing
Water levels are looking good for this time of year. The Trout fisherman are taking advantage of the great weather. Reports are decent from the fly and spinning guys. Sturgeon fishing is good. Remember that the water temperatures are cold so the fish are usually in the deeper holes. Sturgeon fishing is productive but the fish are not real active, please handle these great fish with care especially during the cold temperatures.

Harrison River Fishing
If you get a chance to head over to the Harrison, the weather and water conditions are great. The entire system can produce some nice Cutties this time of year. The area around the mouth of the Chehalis is typically the best.

Chehalis River Fishing
The river low and clear. Some rain may help but it really needs some better flow to improve conditions. If it does rain, try heading out that day or the day after. There has been a few winter/summer steelhead caught in the Upper Canyon Region.

Fraser Valley Lakes Fishing
Winter months are tough, however you may do well on the lower lakes along the shore if the weather allows. A winter day near the water is always a pleasure, a few fish can make it perfect.

Interior Lakes Fishing
The winter months are here, dress warm and enjoy.

Every year approximately 1,000 eagles show up in the Harrison River area alone to feed on the abundant salmon carcasses scattered along the shores of the river. Located a short drive away from the Cottages at Cultus Lake, this trail is a 8km round trip (4 hours) resulting in amazing views.

The Elk Mountain Trail is one of the most rewarding trails in the area given the commanding views of Cultus Lake and South Fraser Valley. The extended hike to Thurston is more ambitious but equally rewarding for the views of Mt. Baker and the Cascade Mountains back country.

“Mark is selfless, knowledgeable, and he sets the bar in terms of community-building for anything to do with fish and watershed,” said Marion Robinson of the Fraser Basin Council.

The award is part of their joint Fraser Salmon and Watersheds Program, honoring the individual of the year who has “made a tangible contribution” to the preservation, enhancement and improvement of the Fraser River watershed and its salmon.

Brian Riddell, of Pacific Salmon Foundation, called Johnson “a partnership catalyst” for a number of key initiatives in the valley.

“He has supported and played integral roles in the Chilliwack River Action Committee, the Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewardship Strategy, the Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition, and many others. He is a great ambassador for what FSWP stands for.”

Johnson’s cash prize will be split by local groups like CRAC, CSS Environmental Club, CLASS, Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival Society, Fraser Valley Conservancy, Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition, and the Skowkale Hatchery Revitalization and Education Project.

“It’s so true to form for him,” said Robinson about giving away his award money. “He’s that kind of unassuming guy. It’s really big of him, too, because it’s tough for those groups to get any financial resources to do the work they’re trying to do.”

Johnson was selected for this recognition by peers and organizations involved in watershed projects of different types.

“He’s a model collaborator, and he deeply understands what it takes to get people to work together,” Robinson continued. “When others are getting discouraged, Mark will find a way.” She said she had the pleasure of making a speech about Johnson when he accepted the Salmon Hero award on June 9.

“He doesn’t even think of himself in these terms,” the FBC official said. “In my speech I pointed out that some aspects of his work are difficult. It’s not every day that people can come to work so energized and enthused. But if Mark ever feels defeated, he never shows it.” Part of his “tangible contribution” to the cause is being a “connector” or “conduit” for the various groups.

This year’s annual meeting, the Fraser Assembly, zeroed in on the all-important skill of collaboration, and the Salmon Hero was selected with special consideration for Johnson’s “outstanding ability” to foster effective collaboration. “It’s not going to be one person who saves the world,” said Robinson. “Mark knows that it takes all of us.”

Sunnyside and Vedder River campgrounds are contributing over 62% of the revenues to the park. Residential and Commercial leases contribute 30% of park revenues.

The breakdown in expenditures is the following:

 

Salaries and benefits continue to make the bulk of the expenditures. Over the past few years, there have been a substantial rise in costs relating to information systems, insurance and other legal costs.

What does this all mean?

When revenues are subtracted from expenses, there is a net operating profit of $140,307. The park also spent $912,625 on capital expenditures, which means that in 2008, the park incurred a deficit of $772,318.
