Cultus Lake Sockeye Cup Regatta

Posted on May 18, 2009

Sails will be hoisted on Cultus Lake this weekend as the Cultus Lake Sailing Club plays host to the 2009 Cultus Lake Sockeye Cup Regatta, this coming weekend Saturday May 23rd & Sunday May 24th.

World-class sailing competitors including Libby McKee & Jonathan McKee will be coming up from Washington State for the Sockeye Cup Regatta. An Olympic medalist, Jonathan McKee is a draw for people to these kinds of events. “These people from Seattle attract a group,” says club commodore Chris Carberry, one of the event organizers.

Mission control for the Sockeye Cup Regatta is at 76 Sunnyside Blvd. Registration takes place on Saturday between 09:30 and 11:00hrs. The first race begins at 1300hrs on Saturday and the Cultus Lake Regatta continues through Sunday afternoon.

“It started off as a small event but it’s actually becoming a big event,” says Carberry. The event is open to Tasar, Laser and open division entries and it’s free to sign up. The club’s website says Olympic courses with variations will be used, and there will be a two-hour time limit for each race. Carberry expects they could have 20 Tasars and seven Lasers taking part in the regatta. “We hope to get as many as we can,” he says.

The 2009 Cultus Lake Sockeye Cup Regatta is sponsored by Glenmore Sailboats, which will be providing prizes for competitors.
